Used Larrivee OM-40R

  • This particular guitar is used only in the most technical sense—it was recently purchased new from this shop by a customer who had our luthier install a K&K Pure Mini. He eventually returned it because he found that the guitar had too much lush, rich tone for his liking. He kept it most of our 30-day trial, so this, along with the installed pickup, leads me to re-sell it as used. It's a good one, and, hey, free pickup.

The Larrivee OM-40 is our bestselling guitar, and for good reason:  With a throwback aesthetic (square headstock, open-back tuners), and an extra dose of bass to fill out the balanced Larrivee tone, they add a welcome element to an already-successful Larrivee lineup.

What is perhaps most amazing about the 40-series guitars is the price—most builders who design new, custom guitars charge substantially more for them, especially when they feature new bracing and a bone nut and saddle like these guitars. But the OM-40R comes in hundreds of dollars less than the OM-09, which makes it a real steal.

Best guitar I have ever played

In my search for an upgrade guitar, I was told about the Larrivee OM-40R that Shoreline Music had. It is a return that a customer sent back because he wanted a higher end guitar. I was lucky enough to get it and I can honestly say that it is the nicest sounding guitar that I have ever played. No offence to any owners of these guitars, but I liked it better than a Martin 000-28EC, a Martin OM-21, a Taylor 816CE, and a Gibson Hummingbird Pro. All of the above mentioned guitars are out of my price range, but the Larrivee was not.

The condition of the guitar was as good as new. There were no marks, abrasions or scratches at all. It was as if it came directly from the factory. And the action was perfect. The wood is beautiful with nice straight grain on the top with some nice silking and the rosewood back and sides were also beautiful with straight, tight grain.

The sound is everything that makes a Larrivee what it is. The tone is balanced, but the new scalloped parabolic bracing gives it some nice low notes as well. The lows are not booming nor are they thumpy but they are very warm and mellow, up front but not overbearing. It is exactly the kind of sound I was looking for in a guitar.

No review would be complete without kudos to John, the head honcho at Shoreline music. His customer service is the best I have ever experienced with any online purchase I have ever made. He is very personable, remembers my name, and he shipped the guitar the same day I ordered it. I got it in 3 days from Colorado to the east coast.

I could not be more pleased with my purchase of the Larrivee OM40R from Shoreline Music.
