Taylor 412-R

  • Taylor has spent the past 3 years rolling out upgrade after upgrade to their product line. Most models have seen substantial improvements, and I think the 400s benefited more than just about every Taylor series.

You'll notice the update as soon as you strum your first chord—there's definitely more fullness than in previous iterations of this guitar. The rosewood adds to this, bringing a welcome lushness and sustain. I've bragged about recent limited-edition versions of this exact guitar, with the prediction that rosewood 400s—all gloss, even—would make it into the standard lineup. I'm glad I was right.

Great guitar

Great guitar; very visually appealing. Tight grain sound board with much bear claw; very comfortable body and neck (screams 'play me'). I use a lot of open tunings and the open strings really ring out well. Neck inlays are striking - nice relief from the diamonds and dots. Set up was great out of the box. Volume is very good - not quite the OM or 000 level, but very adequate for a smaller guitar. I have 9 other similar guitars (Rosewood 00/OM/000) and this Taylor compares well with the best of them.

A Definite Keeper

Appearance-wise, this is a beautiful and elegant, yet understated guitar. I'm not sure if the back is technically book-matched, but it certainly appears that way. The dark rosewood is BEAUTIFUL. I am a fairly small-framed person and this guitar feels excellent in my lap. Sound is beautiful right out of the box-- not quite as jangly and bright as many newer Taylors I've played. It gives every indication of developing even more with age and play. With a light/medium strumming attack, the tone/sustain/volume are great, especially considering the small body size. Although my flat-picking and fingerstyle technique need work (the reason I got this guitar) the note separation and clarity are superb. John provided great service and was very responsive to my many questions. Thanks Shoreline!
