Taylor 414ce

I've often wondered why ovangkol is not more highly regarded as a tonewood. It's not quite as lush tonally as rosewood, but it still carries a good ring, and more harmonics than mahogany or maple (Taylor touts it as the budget replacement for rosewood on this series of guitars). With either sitka or engelmann spruce, it can produce a really versatile instrument. And it really is a gorgeous wood. A good set of ovangkol can be as figured and attractive as any wood.

The good news is that Taylor's sitka and ovangkol 400-series guitars end up being a great way to get that fantastic tone at a lower price than the 700 or 800 models. With the new gloss finish that Taylor is putting on these guitars, the 414ce ends up being a guitar that's hard to beat.
