The 414ce has for most years been our best-selling Taylor model (other than the GS Mini), and for good reason: Ovangkol is a beautiful tonewood that gives you some of the lushness and projection you expect from rosewood, but at a much more affordable price. Our very own Avalon Guitars charges a premium to upgrade to ovangkol, so the fact that Taylor includes it in one of their more affordable lines is a real bonus.
The Spring Limited model shown here includes two major upgrades. First, the finish on the ovangkol is gloss instead of satin. I personally think Taylor should have been glossing their ovangkol all along—it's such a beautiful tonewood, and the gloss really makes it pop. Here's hoping that going forward, all 414s get a gloss back and sides. The second upgrade is to the new ES2 pickup system.
The best part of all of this? There's no extra charge for the pickup or gloss upgrades. The way I see it, if you're already in the market for a 414ce, this Limited model is a no-brainer.
Even better news: Although the Spring Limiteds all sold out long ago, Taylor has updated the standard 400-series lineup to include the two upgrades first introduced with these models—the gloss finish and the ES2 pickup system. You can check them out here.
