The Taylor 522 12-fret has been a huge hit in our shop—in fact, it's our bestselling Taylor. And why not? The smaller dimensions of the Grand Concert make it eminently playable, the short scale lightens the string tension just a bit, and the 12-fret design brings the nut just a little bit closer to the body, meaning you can sit with this guitar for hours and not feel a hint of fatigue.
In my experience, all-mahogany guitars tend to darken the tone a bit, bringing out the mids. And 12-frets, by virtue of the lower placement of the bridge, tend to fill out and warm up otherwise brighter body styles. Putting these elements together in the smaller, more focused Grand Concert results in a remarkably balanced, satisfying instrument.
The current version of the 522 gets an upgrade to Performance bracing (for just a little more guts) and a cool shaded edge burst.
