Taylor 714C

  • I've noted in other listings on our site that the current iteration of Taylor's 700 series really took me by surprise:  What used to be essentially a bling-less 800 now stakes out its own tone and trim territory, with Lutz Spruce on the top, a cool new pickguard, and Koa trim. The Lutz adds just a bit to the mids, and a tiny bit of extra chunk to the lows, reminiscent of the 800 Deluxe models.

My early 700s were all GCs—natch—but this Grand Auditorium adds the expected beef and resonance to the tone. Its somewhat larger size undoubtedly makes it a bit more versatile if you're looking to dig in a bit. Plus, the well-kept secret is that this meaty, resonant tone comes in hundreds less than a comparable 800. You should definitely give this guitar a serious look.

Great guitar for strum, fingering PA on or,off

This is great all around guitar with great pickup sound, they finally nailed it.

Surprised by Lutz!

Before I begin my remarks about the guitar itself I would offer praise for John and the Shoreline team. Their pricing is very fair; the shipping is prompt. They did not do what they said they would do but did even more than they said they would do and included a couple of thoughtful items in the case.

I had been interested in purchasing an OM sized guitar for quite some time and decided to do a fair amount of homework and to play a lot of different guitars. I was seriously considering an OM28 from Martin, a Huss and Dalton OM, and the Taylor 714. The Martin was a beautiful guitar but it did not have the seperation and clarity that I was hoping for. So I was torn between the Taylor and the H&D.

The H&D is a magnificent instrument as is the Taylor. They have related but distinct tones with the H&D shading a bit darker than the Taylor. Ultimately, they are both very fine guitars BUT I chose the Taylor because of how comfortable it is to play. The two guitars were essentially tied in my mind when it came to tone but the Taylor was much more enjoyable and comfortable to play. In my thinking a comfortable guitar is one that will be played a lot.

I am exceptionally pleased with the fit, finish, and function of the Taylor 714 and were I in the market for a GA sized guitar would purchase it again. The Koa binding is a nice aesthetic touch. The Lutz spruce top was a bit of a surprise for me. I had never played Lutz before but it does a great job a a soundboard with good clarity and seperation but allows for a lot of volume when the song calls for it.
