The Northwood mahogany MJ kind of sneaks up on you. John's rosewood MJ, at least as we order it, typically features fancier design touches, while the standard aesthetic of this guitar is more restrained and woody. The rosewood is lush and reverberant, but the mahogany is a bit drier, making for an almost addictive tone: the emphasis is on the fundamentals, which means every note gets its own character and place in whatever piece you're playing. The low E (or D, depending on your tuning) is satisfyingly resonant, and the highs are springy and articulate.
On those rare days when I actually have a chance to sit down and play some guitars in the shop, if we have the mahogany MJ in stock, there's a good chance you'll find me on the couch with this fine guitar on my lap. It's a customer favorite and a real gem.
