Everyone who has ever played a handpan on his lap knows the headache of constantly trying to re-position the instrument because it keeps slipping off. More than once I've had to grab my own personal handpans at the last second before they plummet to the floor.
The good news is, the solution to this is easy and inexpensive. The Rhythm Rest attaches magnetically to the bottom of your handpan, right around the gu (soundhole), and it adds a non-slip surface right where you need it. I'm a huge fan of simple, elegant solutions, and none is more simple or elegant than this.
I actually got to see this in action at the 2026 Heartland Hangout—Mumi was in the middle of a lovely set of music, but her handpans kept slipping off her lap. A member of the audience had several Rhythm Rests in her purse, and the night was saved. (I think it was Mumi's first time trying this, and her reaction was one of profound relief)
I ship all new acoustic handpans with one of these and a jar of Phoenix Oil. They're the essential duo for any acoustic player.
Fun side note: RHYTHMS is a great first word for Hangman.
