Avalon L220

  • Balanced. Beefy. Rich and punchy. Avalon's L220 is their bestselling guitar—you've heard it on more recordings than you may realize—and for very good reason: It really rocks.

While this guitar is uncommonly rich and responsive when you're playing fingerstyle in dropped tunings—the very first video we ever shot was an Avalon L220C in DADGAD—something magic happens when you take a pick to it. There's a thick, fat tone throughout the audible spectrum that makes other guitars stand up and listen. No scooped rosewood mids or lows that overpower then die off. Just balanced, punchy tone like no other. Whenever we have this guitar in our shop, I do side-by-side testing of my repeated assertion that it's the loudest guitar that we sell, and it never lets me down.

Yes, it's a bit bigger than some with a 16 3/8" lower bout. But if slightly larger dimensions are no problem for you, you really need look no further than this guitar. It's fantastic.

Avalon L220

This is a big, solid, loud, expressive guitar with more than a touch of sweetness about it. Extremely well made, it compares easily with Collings, etc. in build quality. The finish and tasteful appointments are elegant and understated. So far, it seems to be string sensitive and will require experimenting. Came with RXPs that I found too strident for my taste. YMMV, (A couple of alternative string sets were included by Shoreline. Thanks!) May have to do a bit of action adjustment once the string thing is worked out, The 1.75+ width neck is hand filling and somewhat thicker than many competitors. John at Shoreline extolled the merits of this guitar for fingerstylists and DADGAD folks. I agree, but for me, the L220 really opened up and roared like a demon once a flatpick was applied in standard tuning. This is a stunning strumming and cross-picking instrument for all genres!
