Larrivee OM-40

  • The Larrivee OM-40 is our bestselling guitar, and for good reason:  With a throwback aesthetic (square headstock, open-back tuners), and an extra dose of bass to fill out the balanced Larrivee tone, they add a welcome element to an already-successful Larrivee lineup.

What is perhaps most amazing about the 40-series guitars is the price—most builders who design new, custom guitars charge substantially more for them, especially when they feature new bracing and a bone nut and saddle like these guitars. But the OM-40 comes in hundreds of dollars less than the OM-05, which makes it a real steal.

Please note: The guitar pictured may not be the one that ships to you. We stock these pretty deeply, and will send you the best example from whatever we have in stock.

Exceeds Expectations

The Larivee OM 40 is an amazing instrument. You can tell right away that the craftsmanship that goes into these guitars. I love everything about it but one thing that really stands out to me is how resonate it is just by tapping on the the body…it’s like a drum. The low end compared to the OM-03 is much more present and really makes the guitar sound balanced IMO.

As for looks the mahogany with maple binding is beautiful as is the rosette and purfling against the spruce top. The smell of the wood is amazing too!

Buying at Shoreline has been a great experience. Extremely competitive pricing and generous return policy. I don’t ever see me parting with this guitar though. Highly recommended!

Where Desire Meets Reality

I am too much of all the things that cripple a guitar shopper: uncompromising, demanding, paranoid and greedy. I set out to find an OM that would be perfect for my preferences--with full awareness of the madness of that task. The OM-40 is simply the best guitar I've ever played. I was aware of Larrivee's talents with mahogany and they show up here with astounding results. The clarity and depth of tone are to die for. There is a simple beauty that is built into these guitars. Very light, airy feeling body with expert craftsmanship. No detail is left unattended. But these woods...goodness...perhaps you have played a lot of sapele/spruce--there are some good ones made by Martin and Taylor, and I've owned them. Premium mahogany is a treasure IMO. I'm sure the rosewood OM-40 is excellent too, but I was seeking a clarity and woodiness that I just was not finding in expensive, rosewood guitars. The depth and punch of this guitar is rare. The price is ridiculously low compared to the cost you face from other big name, high-profile acoustic guitars. I don't need or want a larger guitar. Everything I desire is in this OM-40. The neck is ideal. Playability is off the charts--and I'm comparing to Taylor's best. Versatile? The very definition. Fingerpicking, crosspicking, strumming...well...this instrument just rises to whatever style you're embracing. The guitar has a heart. You can feel it when you play. You can feel the rumble...the intonations...the subtleties, the definition...the wood! This wood doesn't just deliver sound, it delivers a life of its own. And for this guitar player, well, That. Is. Everything.
Thank you John for selling the best, for standing by the best with a bold return promise--that won me over in the end. There are so many variables that come into play when buying a guitar of this quality. It ain't easy. But sometimes you hit it big. The Larrivee OM-40 is a marvel. And I really can't remember the last time I reacted to a guitar so positively. Amen.

Best OM I've played in my life

It took a while to get it across the Atlantic but it's been worth waiting for.
This guitar is a beauty in terms of both, looks & sound! Given the crystal clear
tone and the extaordinary response it's very nearly unputdownable. Also it is very
versatile: from Bluegrass to Bach playing it is just maximum fun!
It's certainly my favourite OM if not my favourite steelstring altogether.

OM-40 is a champ

The OM-40 is an incredible guitar - not just for the price but in its own right. Great sound, wonderful materials and craftsmanship, and loud! The purchasing experience couldn't be better: John followed up all my questions and is just a great person to work with.
