If you're like me, the last part of your gear you think about is your strap. When I get up onstage, I'm thinking about sound check, tuning, and my songlist, and I just kind of throw on whatever strap is available. But when you're playing for several hours, it becomes painfully evident if you have a lousy guitar strap.
Well, a few years back, Bruce Adolph handed me a Long Hollow Leather strap, and despite its apparently simple design, I immediately noticed it was the most comfortable guitar strap I had ever slung over my shoulder. Also, the wide part of the strap actually reached up and over my shoulder—I'm 6'6", and this is a rarity. Needless to say, I was immediately impressed with these straps, and after several hours with a bass guitar hanging off one, I realized what I had been missing all along. If you're tired of your ratty old nylon strap and are looking for a high-quality, comfortable strap, I cannot recommend these highly enough. The Deluxe Padded Premier is a perennial favorite in our shop. The tooled leather is quite attractive, and the padding makes for a really nice strap. The only caveat is that it's not as supple as Long Hollow's other offerings, at least not right out of the box. Regular usage does soften things up a bit, which is why customers regularly come back for more of these, often going for different colors or tooling patterns.
Great strap most comfortable I ever had.
I've reviewed these and other Long Hollow straps before, but I think the black is probably my favorite color. LH's dye work is quite good and the strap is dressy enough for almost all work environments (read: weddings to cowboy bars, etc.). The padding is comfortable and while John is right that this LH version is stiffer than a Softy, it ain't bad especially if you work it with your hands for a few minutes. Since it feels like good boot leather, you may be inclined to oil it. My best advice is to leave it be and let it do it's job over the long run. It will likely outlast you.
I bought one of these straps from Shoreline a few years ago. It's a very comfortable and handsome strap - comfortable because it has some padding sewn inside, and handsome because of the tooling on the leather outside. After several years of use it's more comfortable than when it was new. It is also a good value, as it's priced lower than a comparable strap produced by the big name manufacturers. If you're looking to save a few bucks, then the Long Hollow Leather Softy is also a nice comfortable strap, without the extra padding. I highly recommend this one.
