I'm rather tall, so I've never had a problem playing large instruments. But my own handpan journey has seen me share my instruments with hundreds of people, and it quickly became clear that a regular handpan, with a radius of around 22in / 55cm, was too big for some folks to hold. Sure, you can always find a stand if you don't have the lap space, but sometimes it's nice to be able to play just about anywhere.
Handpans can be made smaller, of course, but the challenge is getting resonant, lively tone out of a smaller body. With this compact (48cm) version of their D-Kurd, Patera has pulled it off nicely. The scale is the same as Patera's other D-Kurd offerings—the ding is a D3—and it maintains nearly all of the resonant, lively tone. If you've been looking for a smaller handpan, this is a great place to start.
