I've been a big fan of the Zoom H5 for years. If you've ever listened to any of our demo videos, you've heard that mic in action—other than the first few, they were all recorded with Zoom H5s. When I saw that Zoom had updated the H5 with this H5 Studio, I couldn't wait to try it out.
And what an update this is: the biggest mics on any Zoom portable (and new, larger rubber feet to accommodate them), new level dials for the two external mic inputs, a snazzy new color LCD with clearer level displays. But far and away the best part of this mic is the addition of 32-bit Float. Zoom has slowly been adding it to some of its other mics, but the H5 really comes out on top of all of these. If you've never used it, 32-bit Float effectively eliminates clipping, which means you don't have to worry about input gain—you just turn it on and hit record. You do need software that will process the files, but nowadays, that pretty much every DAW can, as well as most video editors (which is where I use it the most).
