Avalon L220C

  • Balanced. Beefy. Rich and punchy. Avalon's L220 is their bestselling guitar—you've heard it on more recordings than you may realize—and for very good reason: It really rocks.

While this guitar is uncommonly rich and responsive when you're playing fingerstyle in dropped tunings—the very first video we ever shot was an Avalon L220C in DADGAD—something magic happens when you take a pick to it. There's a thick, fat tone throughout the audible spectrum that makes other guitars stand up and listen. No scooped rosewood mids or lows that overpower then die off. Just balanced, punchy tone like no other. Whenever we have this guitar in our shop, I do side-by-side testing of my repeated assertion that it's the loudest guitar that we sell, and it never lets me down.

Yes, it's a bit bigger than some with a 16 3/8" lower bout. But if slightly larger dimensions are no problem for you, you really need look no further than this guitar. It's fantastic.

Avalon L220C

The A220C is a remarkable instrument. Build quality is top-notch, tonewoods are beautiful, and the aesthetic appointments are simple yet tasteful. As for sound, this guitar has a loud and powerful voice, and it has what feels like unlimited headroom. This thing is a beast when you ask it to be, and it won't back down if you really dig in. I play mainly rhythm style with a flatpack in a small group of other acoustic instruments, and this Avalon has plenty of volume and punch; the guitar really holds its own in the mix. With that said, it's still remarkably well-mannered, and very responsive to a light touch. Notes ring out beautifully up and down the fretboard, and there's plenty of sustain and a sweet richness in the tone. It's a slightly heavier build than my Northwood, and it's not the bassiest guitar I've played... but it feels well-balanced and still gives a satisfying resonance against the body like a quality guitar should. As with any guitar, I suspect it will open up even more as it ages. Playability is excellent, and the neck is super comfortable. It came from the shop with a great setup--perfect for my playing style. Oh, and it comes with a really nice Hiscox case too. Highly recommended!
